Silverstone Classic Car Gathering & Race Meeting 28.-30. Juli 2006

Special Allard Anniversary Meeting

Allard Car Gathering at Silverstone aufgrund des Jubiläums 70 Jahre/60 Jahre Allard

(English version at the end)

Allard Owners Club Concours

Allard Car Gathering at Silverstone a Part of the Allard Anniversary Celebrations

Allard Owners Club Concours

Allard Owners Club has chosen the Bonhams Historic Festival at Silverstone 28/29/30 July as being a large event of the right type centrally situated and at a time of year when most people could have their cars on the road and the weather might be good.

Silverstone did the Allard Owners Club proud with the best location at the venue to attract visitors. The Allard area had the bar and Radio Silverstone next and the racing paddock at the other end. Opposite were Bonhams and the fairground and behind the Allard area were the Ferari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo clubs. Every Vehicle and pedestrian going to or from the paddock came by the huge frontage of the Allards with most seeming to at least stop for photographs, and many spending a long time with the Allards.

Three Allards were entered in Saturday’s pre 1956 Sportcar Race, a one hour two driver event. In Fridays qualifying they all ran well with the Shead/Dron J2 fifth fastest behind D Type, 300 S, C Type and HWM Jaguar. The other Allards entering the race have been Allard JR and an Allard J2X.

In the race on Saturday the three Allards ran well, with Shead/Dron holding 4th/5th until a delay to fix a loose exhaust, dropped them back but Dron did set the fastest lap of the race and all three finished well after an hour of hard racing.

The Allard Owners Club Concours had a great exposure for the 32 Allards that turned out, including the Steyr Allard and 8 J Types plus 3 P based Allard specials and 2 rally winning L Types. For the different price giving categories it was difficult to decide who would be the best. But the price for the greatest distance to join the Allard Anniversary Celebration was awarded unanimously to Bernd and Dorothee Sgraja coming from Bergisch-Gladbach in Germany.

(Text version from AOC Monthly Newsletter shortened and modified)

To summarise, the Historic Festival at Silverstone is for every classic car enthusiast a valuable tour due to the special atmosphere and the car display of the clubs is different from continental events.

Le Mans Classique 7. - 9. Juliet 2006

Every two years, the crème de la crème of historic racing cars meets in Le Mans and puts up exciting 24 hours lasting duels.

We took part with our Allard type J 2 X Le Mans!

There are many great events in the world, but the crowning event is Le Mans.
Round 400 racing cars from all over the world, all of them built between 1922 and 1979 are divided in six relays starting staggered.
They drive the race one after the other, each of them putting up a race of 45 minutes.
After the first part of six rounds, the race is repeated two times, lasting over all 24 hours starting on Saturday at 4.00 p.m. and ending on Sunday, 4.00 p.m.
Our start in Le Mans was very good, but unfortunately we had to drop out in the second race because of radiator and thermic problems. Too bad!
But it was worth all the trouble and effort! Taking part is what counts!!
Besides many Aston Martin, Bugatti, Porsche, Lola, Jaguar C and so on, only four Allard took part in Le Mans:
Allard J 2 belonging to Albert Otten, Germany
Allard J 2 belonging to Bardinon, France
Allard J 2 R belonging to Winsor-Price, England and
Allard J 2 X Le Mans belonging to Reichle, Germany

Le Mans 2008 is a date already fixed in our planning!!

2006 A Year for Celebration for Allards

The year 2006 will be the 70th Anniversary of the first appearance of a car bearing the name "Allard".  It was actually an Allard Special built by Sydney Allard to meet his own requirement  built,  albeit  in considerable secrecy, under the auspices of Adlard Motors. Based on the modified chassis of a Model 48  Ford V8  with bodywork part Bugatti and part own built  the car bore the registration number
CLK 5    Its first competitive outing was the North West London Motor Club's  Coventry Cup Trial held on 14th March 1936 with its control  point in the  Royal Clarence Hotel, located at Bridgewater in Somerset.Other Allard related anniversaries occurring in 2006 include the 60th anniversary of  laying down  in January 1946 of the first production chassis at the Allard Motor Co,  and the 55th anniversary of the founding of The Allard Owners Club.Allard owners in UK will be organising  several events to celebrate this special year.  The first will be held during March and feature a  Nostalgia  Congregation Run centred on Bridgewater and perhaps following the rote of the 1936 Coventry Trial.    Unfortunately the  actual Royal Clarence Hotel no  longer  exists.

Also during March will be the regular Allard Owners Club Annual Dinner and Prizegiving.

Towards the end of July owners of Allards will  be encouraged to join together at a Coy's Silverstone Classic Car Gathering and Race Meeting.  Its the hope to gather 70 Allard  cars together on one day and investigations are taking place into the feasibility of setting up an Allard Class within the Drum Brake Challenge Races that will be run over the weekend with  perhaps  a separate trophy.   On paper there are enough race driven  Allards available to make a significant presence on the grid.

Other opportunities  for extra-special commemorations of the man and  his cars that we admire are the Midlands and Northern Section of the AOC  Dinner ( January/February)  and Annual Lunch in October.

All owners of Allards  world-wide will be welcome  to come and participate  in these events and hopefully some of our European cousins will be able to bring their cars and join in the fun.

In the first instance to register interest in details of partaker events contact me,.Mike Knapman, at allardrocketat.co.uk.
